UPRR 1988 Chevy Cheyenne 3500 3×3 Hi-Rail Truck

CHEVROLET

Purchased by the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) in 1988 as a light section truck, this truck would have been used to maintain spurs and repair minor track defects found by the inspector.  Donated to the Austin Steam Train Association (ASTA) by the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) after their previous hi-rail truck was destroyed by the tornado that decimated the town of Jarrell, TX, ASTA used this truck to proceed all train operations to verify that there were no track obstructions prior to the SP 786 coming through.

Deemed unnecessary after Capital Metro added CTC to the line and freight operations had picked up enough that trains run regularly on the line now, the hi-rail was parked in the yard and used to do menial tasks around their yard.  After suffering damage to the front hi-rail gear and someone dumping used motor oil in the fuel tank, it was determined to either scrap or sell the truck.

Purchased for $500, SARHM is currently working on completely restoring the truck and will be using the truck for various tasks ranging from museum emissary, representing the museum at parades and shows.  Ultimately the truck will be used by the museum to help perform the duties it was originally intended to do when it was purchased by the UPRR.
